Wesley Prince. I have been dancing for twelve years and really fell in love with salsa after my first experience. I remember travelling down to the Custard Factory (Dance/Art Studio in Birmingham England) to enquire about Flamenco lessons as I had decided that year (1996) to add a dance form to my list of goals.
As I approached the studio I heard a teacher (Mauricio Reyes) counting in time to Latin music, which was being played in the background. I peered through the window and watched my first salsa class being taught; it looked exciting, especially when the teacher demonstrated a move and asked the student to copy, after which he asked them to put their hands together to congratulate themselves. The atmosphere was positive and infectious; I went inside and must have looked out of place as I was wearing a blue suit and tie. I watched the remainder of the class and did not leave until I had learned the basics steps of salsa, namely the Mambo Step, Side Step, Back Step and the basic Mambo turn.
That week I practised those steps to the music that I had at the time which was anything other than Salsa in preparation for the class the following week. I went, loved it and can safely say that I have not stopped learning about salsa and the passion that I have for it to this day.
I now teach salsa and find it a privilege to pass on a skill that I so enjoy. In 2003 was awarded the United Kingdom Alliance (UKA) Associate Certificate after successfully proving my ability and knowledge as a Salsa Teacher. My preferred style is New York Mambo on 2 although I also teach mambo on 1 & Cha Cha Cha. I can draw on the experiences that I had when I was a beginner and can structure classes to benefit and give my very best to both men and women. At the same time, it is my wish to become a better dancer, teacher and to continue with the love that I have for salsa.
